Welcome to Learn With Reemii!

I’m Reem Salem, also known as Reemii, a PhD candidate in Molecular Life Sciences with a particular interest in neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases.

I created this space to make biology easier to understand and share what I’m learning along the way. Here, you’ll find biology explanations, practical study advice and reflections on the journey from undergraduate student to researcher. Whether you’re studying biology or simply curious about how life works, you’re welcome here.

Outside science, you’ll usually find me with a book and a cup of coffee, although I’ll happily make room for a warm cup of tea.

How I got here?

I’d love to say I’ve been passionate about science since I was a baby, but that would be a little dramatic. Honestly, I wasn’t particularly interested in science until biology came along.

That changed in ninth grade. Biology fascinated me, and I started reading, researching and watching documentaries to understand more. Then I discovered genetics, which became my entire personality for a year or two.

Taking AP Biology was one of the best decisions I made in high school. It introduced me to everything from ecology to molecular biology, including concepts such as transcription and translation that made me want to keep learning.

That curiosity eventually took me to United Arab Emirates University, where I studied Cellular and Molecular Biology. Through practical work, including PCR and DNA extraction, I began connecting the concepts I’d learned with what I could investigate in the lab. Each experience left me with more questions.

Next came an intensive, one-year master’s programme. For my thesis, I had the privilege of working in a neurodegenerative diseases laboratory, exploring an area that had interested me for a long time. That experience helped me realise that I wanted to pursue research and contribute to our understanding of life at the molecular level.

Now, as a PhD candidate, I’m continuing that journey, with plenty still to learn.

Why I share what I learn?

I remember how overwhelming biology could feel when unfamiliar terms and complicated processes arrived all at once. I also remember the satisfaction when an explanation finally made something click.

That’s what I hope to offer here: clear explanations, useful resources and an encouraging place to ask questions and explore.
